Boundless Motion: Land & Form

Graystone Gallery, Edinburgh
10th October - 9th November 2025

In our exhibition ‘Boundless Motion: Land & Form’, artists Astrid Leeson and Sophia Pauley orchestrate a mesmerising dialog between the tangible and the ephemeral, weaving reality and memory into a tapestry of movement and emotion. Through Astrid’s poetic landscapes and Sophia’s connected abstractions ‘Boundless Motion: Land & Form’, invites viewers to traverse a terrain where the physical and emotional converge, creating an immersive experience that resonates like a heartbeat.

Astrid’s landscapes are at once grounded and ethereal, capturing the pulse of the natural world. Her canvases render rolling hills and windswept fields in soft washes of ochre and indigo, their edges blurred as if dissolving into memory.  Her brush strokes evoke the slow turn of geological time, yet there’s a restless vitality – a gust of wind, a ripple across a lake – that imbues her work with a sense of living presence. Her landscapes are invitations to feel the earths breath. They anchor the exhibition, offering a tactile connection to place that grounds the viewers journey.

In vibrant counterpoint, Sophia's abstract works explode with dynamic energy, their bold lines and vivid hues slicing through the canvas. Each pulses with eternal force, their swirling forms and electric palette suggesting motion unbound by gravity or form. Her abstractions are not chaotic but choreographed, each stroke a deliberate gesture in an unknown dance. Her work channels the intangible into visual symphonies. Where Astrid offers roots, Sophia provides wings, urging viewers to leap into the unmoored expanse of feeling.

The exhibition offers a spatial choreography that mirrors the interplay of its themes. The gallery’s open layout allows Astrid and Sophia’s work to converse without hierarchy, their pieces aligned in a rhythm that evokes a journey across physical and emotional landscapes. This oscillation between serenity and intensity, structure and freedom, mirrors the human experience of navigating space and its absence – both the weight of presence and the pull of the void.

‘Boundless Motion: Land & Form’ transcends mere juxtaposition, weaving Astrid’s and Sophia’s visions into a singular narrative. Their contrasting styles compliment and complete each other, illustrating how movement and emotion breathe life into form. The exhibition space itself becomes a metaphor for connection, its open vistas and intimate corners inviting viewers to wander, reflect, and feel. Here, land and form are not static but alive, pulsing with the boundless motion of our own experience. Step into this dance of earth and energy and let it carry you across the horizon.
